Letter From Christine
Dear Friends,

We are only a few weeks away from celebrating our 40th anniversary!
1st Way was founded on October 26, 1972 by Maria Campion.  Even before Roe vs. Wade was decided, young girls were taking buses over to California to terminate their pregnancies.  Through her courage and fortitude, Maria and her friends began serving the unborn and their mothers.  The humble beginning started at their kitchen tables and with their home phone lines.  They would meet or talk by phone with the mothers and counsel and support them.  On average, the women would spend about 8 hours a week serving in this capacity.  They were mainly people she knew from her parish and from surrounding parishes.  In the mid-1980's the Catholic Diocese offered them a room within their offices.  The volunteers were then able to increase their time to about 16 hours a week and continued to offer pregnancy tests and counseling.  Some of the early volunteers even took women into their homes and supported them during their pregnancy and beyond.  As the needs grew and the number of women contemplating abortion grew, so did the number of volunteers at 1st Way.  We were able to move into the "little pink house on the corner" in 1990.  We continued to offer pregnancy tests, counseling and practical support.  Our hours increased to 20 hours a week.  So, the "kitchen table" and our humble beginnings were still very real because we had so many ladies from the nearby parishes helping.  And, there was actually a kitchen table in the little house.

As technology developed, we were able to bring a depth to our services by offering ultrasounds.  In 2005 we began showing each client their tiny babies on our very first ultrasound machine.  It really is an amazing technology that allows the unborn child to be seen in the womb in a very real way.  Since ultrasounds became available, we have witnessed a much higher success rate of women choosing life for their child.  Today, we are still in the "little pink house on the corner" and have found the need to rent some additional space in building next door.  We have been growing at the same rate as our culture declines.  The more our society walks down the path of the culture of death, the more space we need because the number of unborn babies that need an advocate increases.  We are currently discerning God's will in where He wants us to grow.  As much as I would love to stay the size we are now and hope that our culture starts turning the tide by embracing the culture of life, we don't see that happening any time soon.

I am so incredibly grateful for our staff now, and those over the years, who have opened their hearts to every person who has walked through the doors.  When the culture of death, through the undecided abortion minded mother, walks through our door, we love them and teach them about how they were beautifully and wonderfully made. We encourage them to see the gift of life in their own lives and that of their unborn children.  Even though we are growing, we are still able to maintain our "kitchen table" approach and be open 54 hours a week, because our staff and volunteers continue to embody the heart and mission of 1st Way.

We have a rich history and are grateful to God for His trust in us in helping carry out this part of His mission.  As we prepare to celebrate our 40 years, I ask for your prayers.  We have a lot to be grateful for.

Our annual gala will be on Saturday evening, October 27th The dinner and program being developed for the evening is one that will reflect our rich history and it will be very celebratory.  We are currently seeking assistance with the underwriting for this event.  I ask you to prayerfully consider contributing, even if in a small way.  The gala always helps us secure the necessary funding that we need to operate through the year.
If you are interested in helping and/or attending, please contact Bethany at our office, (602) 261-7522.

May God richly bless you and your families!  Please be assured of my personal prayers for each of you every day.

Peace,
Christine
